There is beauty all around us. I believe we were created for it. To be examples of it, to celebrate it, to embody it, to long for it. I believe beauty is living and breathing and is life itself.
The arts are so powerful because it goes beyond the boundaries of our tangible reality and pushes us to see what we are really all longing for in the end. A beauty that we can participate in. We can imagine it and we feel connected to it but we get caught up in distractions of schedules and mundane routines to realize we have access to the source of this beauty. That’s why I believe the arts can serve as a bridge to our hearts for God to awaken and stir new life in us. I’m passionate about spurring others on to use their creative gifts for this very reason. It can be a bridge to our own heart for God to use and shape us but also to point others to Him as well.
I believe God is an incredible artist and being created in His image, we are all artists in some form. A quote I love about that is:
“Making art is an intrinsically valuable act. Period. Today your art might be a strawberry rhubarb pie. Tomorrow it might be a painting that hangs in the Guggenheim someday. And the day after that it might be the way you fluff and arrange your pillows.”
In the past 2 years, God decided to really get a hold of me and led me to songwriting. I have found it to be a very compelling and therapeutic art form and many days it’s a form of prayer. You’ll find some of my music and devotionals paired with certain songs on my blog. I released my first album this past year and you’ll find links to it under the “Libby John Music” tab or on my YouTube channel: libbyjohnartandsong
My prayer is truly that the music will speak to you and lead you to a time of prayer, worship, rest and restoration with God.
Music has become so commercialized and minimized to mere entertainment that I think we’ve lost sight of the fact that music is sacred. It has the power to heal, to soothe, to bring joy, to bring breaktrhough in a dark night. It also has the power to make us want to move. Everything that has life, moves.
I’m a dancer/choreographer and I love to fill spaces with beauty. I don’t share too much of my dance and teaching projects on my blog but once in a while you’ll see something dance related come up.
I also dabble in photography and love snapping a pretty picture. I especially love a beautiful presentation of a meal or any food really. I believe gathering around a table with others is an act of beauty itself because we were created to commune together. I created my “Around the Table” posts to celebrate that act and to encourage others to do so as well. You can check there for some of my favorite places my lovely city has to offer and occasionally I’ll share a favorite recipe to make for those you love to gather around your own table.
I also LOVE a good cup of coffee and sharing it with a friend.
So anytime, really, call me.
Who Libby is…
I graduated from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and an emphasis in dance. I’ve lived in Minnesota since I was ten years old however, my parents moved to Columbus, OH when I graduated from high school so I feel like I have a second home there. I’ve been married to my husband for almost 15 years and he is my rock who keeps me steady and grounded. He’s a scientist at 3M and yes, we are science meets artsy. We have three daughters which is quite fun. The oldest is in middle school, the younger two in elementary school.
We also have a cute little Havanese dog named Dakota, after my husband’s and my home states. His is North Dakota, mine is South Dakota.
I’ve always been a runner and yes, I’m kind of one of those crazy ones sometimes. I teach hip hop and modern and choreograph side projects here and there. I’m a songwriter/musician. I love words and small beginnings. One of my favorite quotes is “Small hinges swing big doors”. I love the creative process and collaboration. I also love contrast, seeing beauty in brokenness and meaning in the mundane. I hope your time here encourages you and inspires you. Please connect with me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with the icons above. I’d love to meet you.
